What Is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by deterioration of bone tissue leading to a decrease in bone density which can increase your risk of sustaining a fracture. This decrease in bone density occurs gradually over time, with both men and women beginning to lose bone in their mid-30s. As such, for those who develop osteoporosis there are often no symptoms unless a fracture has occurred. A common misconception about osteoporosis is that it only affects postmenopausal women. However, osteoporosis can occur in men as well as younger individuals. According to Osteoporosis Canada, there are 2.3 million Canadians living with osteoporosis, and at least 1/3 women and 1/5 men will sustain an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime.
I Have Been Diagnosed with Osteopenia/Osteoporosis, What Can I Do?
Speak with your family doctor regarding diet/nutrition and see if any supplements such as calcium and vitamin D are required. Calcium helps with building strong bones, and vitamin D assists in the absorption of calcium. Registered Dieticians can also be a wonderful resource to assist with ensuring you are getting adequate calcium through your diet. Your doctor may also discuss with you various pharmaceutical options or refer you to an endocrinologist specializing in osteoporosis.
Physical activity is also a key factor in reducing your risk of fracture and osteoporosis treatment. Bones are stimulated to form new bone & remodel the bone to be stronger when loads are placed upon them. Weight-bearing physical activity and resistance training are ways to help promote this process. Physical activity can also help in improving your posture, core stability, strength, and balance which will aid in decreasing your risk of a fall. Speaking with a healthcare provider such as a physiotherapist who has additional osteoporosis training (I.e. BoneFit™ training) can help you in developing a well-rounded physical activity routine.
